How do I use this online metronome?

What does BPM mean?
BPM stands for beats per minute, the number of clicks the metronome plays in one minute. At 60 BPM there is exactly one beat per second; at 120 BPM there are two. Most music falls between 60 and 180 BPM, and this metronome covers 30 to 240 BPM.
What is tap tempo and how does it work?
Tap tempo lets you find the BPM of music you can hear or imagine. Tap the button in rhythm at least twice and the metronome averages the time between your recent taps to compute the tempo. Keep tapping and it keeps refining; pause for more than two seconds and it starts fresh.
What do the time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8) change?
The time signature sets how many beats form one bar, which controls when the accented first beat plays and how many indicator dots are shown. 4/4 is the most common signature in popular music, 3/4 is the waltz feel, 2/4 is common in marches and polkas, and 6/8 gives a compound feel with six quick pulses per bar. Choosing 1/4 disables the bar structure and gives you a plain unaccented click.
What do the Italian tempo names like Adagio and Allegro mean?
Before metronomes existed, composers described speed with Italian words. This tool shows the conventional marking for the current BPM: Grave and Largo are very slow (below 60), Adagio around 66 to 76, Andante is a walking pace around 76 to 108, Moderato around 108 to 120, Allegro is fast at 120 to 156, and Vivace, Presto and Prestissimo are faster still. The ranges are conventions rather than strict rules, and editions vary slightly.
How accurate is a browser-based metronome?
This metronome does not rely on JavaScript timers to play clicks, because those can be delayed when the browser is busy. Instead, each click is scheduled slightly in advance on the Web Audio API's hardware audio clock, which is accurate to the individual audio sample. In practice the click is as steady as a dedicated hardware metronome.
What is the best way to practice with a metronome?
Start well below performance tempo, at a speed where you can play the passage perfectly, and only raise the BPM in small steps (3 to 5 BPM) once it feels easy. Consistency beats speed: five clean repetitions at a slower tempo build more solid timing than rushed attempts at full speed. Many teachers also recommend practicing with the click on beats 2 and 4 (backbeat) once the basics feel comfortable.
Why does the first beat sound different?
With the accent option enabled, the first beat of every bar plays at a higher pitch and slightly louder. This mirrors how conductors and drummers mark the downbeat and makes it much easier to stay oriented within the bar. If you prefer a perfectly uniform click, untick the accent option or choose the 1/4 signature.

The Metronome: A Stolen Invention That Beethoven Made Famous

The metronome's origin is one of music history's better scandals. Around 1812, the Amsterdam inventor Dietrich Nikolaus Winkel discovered that a pendulum weighted on both sides of its pivot could tick at musically useful speeds while staying compact. Johann Nepomuk Maelzel, a showman and builder of musical automata, visited Winkel, saw the mechanism, and patented a refined version under his own name in 1815 as the "Maelzel Metronome". Winkel protested and a Dutch commission later agreed the idea was his, but by then Maelzel's name was stamped on thousands of pyramid-shaped boxes. That is why classical scores still carry markings like "MM = 120": Maelzel's Metronome.

Maelzel's masterstroke was marketing: he convinced Ludwig van Beethoven to adopt the device. Beethoven, whose deafness made communicating tempo increasingly difficult, published metronome marks for all eight of his symphonies to date in 1817 and became the machine's most famous endorser. Curiously, his markings have puzzled musicians ever since, as many seem almost unplayably fast. Scholars have proposed everything from a broken metronome to misread scales; a 2020 mathematical study suggested Beethoven may simply have read the pendulum scale at the wrong point. Most modern conductors split the difference and take his numbers as spirited suggestions.

The metronome has had a surprisingly rich life outside the practice room. Composer György Ligeti wrote his 1962 Poème symphonique for exactly 100 mechanical metronomes, wound up and released together on stage until the last one winds down alone. In 2005, the artist collective behind Punkt Ω synchronized public metronome installations across European cities. And a strange physics demonstration keeps going viral: place several mechanical metronomes on a light movable platform, start them out of phase, and within minutes they spontaneously synchronize, a phenomenon called entrainment first described by Christiaan Huygens in 1665 when he noticed two pendulum clocks on the same beam ticking in step.
