Morse code is one of the oldest electrical communication systems still in active use, and this Morse code translator lets you convert text to Morse and decode Morse back to plain text instantly, right in your browser. The code was developed in the 1830s and 1840s by Samuel F. B. Morse and his collaborator Alfred Vail for the electric telegraph. On 24 May 1844 Morse sent the famous first long-distance message, "What hath God wrought", from Washington to Baltimore, and within a decade telegraph wires and dot-dash signals were spanning continents. The original American Morse was later refined into International Morse Code, the version standardized today by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the one this translator uses.

How do I use this Morse code translator?

What do the spaces and slashes in the Morse output mean?
A single space separates the code for individual letters, and a forward slash (/) separates words. For example, HI YOU becomes ".... .. / -.-- --- ..-". This is the standard plain-text convention for writing Morse code and it is what the decoder expects as input.
What is WPM and how is Morse speed measured?
WPM means words per minute. Because words have different lengths, Morse speed is calibrated using the reference word PARIS, which is exactly 50 dot units long including gaps. At 20 WPM the word PARIS would be sent 20 times in one minute, which makes one dot unit last 60 ms. This tool's slider covers 5 to 30 WPM using that standard.
Why does the audio play at 600 Hz?
A tone between 500 and 800 Hz is the range most Morse operators find comfortable and easy to copy for long periods, and 600 Hz is a very common default on amateur radio receivers. Higher pitches become fatiguing and very low pitches make it harder to distinguish closely spaced dots.
What is SOS in Morse code?
SOS is three dots, three dashes, three dots: ...---... It was adopted internationally in 1908 because it is unmistakable, not because it abbreviates any phrase. Backronyms like "Save Our Souls" came later. It is properly sent as one continuous sequence with no letter gaps, making it a prosign rather than three separate letters.
Is Morse code still used today?
Yes. Amateur radio operators use it daily because Morse is readable through interference and weak signals that make voice unusable. Aviation navigation beacons (VOR and NDB) broadcast their identifiers in Morse. It is also used as an accessibility input method, letting people write with one or two switches, and militaries still teach it for backup and covert signalling.
Which characters does the translator support?
All 26 Latin letters, the digits 0 to 9, and the ITU punctuation set: period, comma, question mark, apostrophe, exclamation mark, slash, parentheses, ampersand, colon, semicolon, equals, plus, minus, underscore, quotation mark, dollar sign and at sign. Characters without an ITU code, such as emoji or accented letters, are flagged under the input so nothing disappears silently.
How long does it take to learn Morse code?
Most learners reach 5 to 10 WPM in one to two months of short daily practice. The recommended approach is the Koch method combined with Farnsworth timing: learn characters at full speed (15 WPM or more) but with extra spacing between them, then gradually close the gaps. Listening practice with real audio, like this tool's playback, matters far more than memorizing a printed chart.
What is the difference between American and International Morse code?
American (railroad) Morse, the original 1840s code, used variable-length dashes and internal spaces within some characters, which made it harder to automate. International Morse, standardized in Europe in 1851 and maintained by the ITU, uses only two element lengths (dots and dashes) and is the version used worldwide today, including by this translator.

Morse Code: The Victorian Internet That Refused to Die

Long before fibre optics, telegraph operators formed the world's first online community. Skilled operators could recognize each other purely by their "fist", the personal rhythm and quirks of their keying, much like recognizing a friend's handwriting. They chatted between messages, played remote chess games, and even conducted romances over the wire. Historians have called the telegraph network "the Victorian Internet", and its language was Morse. First-class operators could send and copy over 40 words per minute for hours, and the fastest ever recorded, Ted McElroy, copied 75.2 WPM at a 1939 championship, a record that still stands.

Morse code's most dramatic hour came at sea. When the Titanic struck an iceberg in April 1912, wireless operator Jack Phillips sent both the old CQD distress call and the newer SOS until minutes before the ship went under; the Carpathia's Morse room heard him and saved over 700 people. Maritime Morse lasted another 87 years, until satellite systems replaced it in 1999. When the French navy sent its final commercial Morse transmission in 1997, the operators chose a poetic sign-off: "Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence."

The code has kept finding new lives.
