Simon is the electronic memory game that turned four glowing buttons and four musical notes into a worldwide phenomenon. The rules take seconds to learn. Press Start and the game lights up one pad while playing its tone. Repeat it by pressing the same pad, and the game responds by replaying the sequence with one new step added to the end. Each round the chain grows longer: first one pad, then two, then three, and so on. Your job is simply to watch, listen, and repeat the entire sequence in order. One wrong press ends your run in strict mode, or lets you retry the same sequence in relaxed mode. This browser version follows the classic layout and behavior, including a gradual speed-up as the sequence grows, and it runs entirely on your device with no installation or account.
Simon is also a neat window into how human memory works. In his famous 1956 paper, psychologist George Miller argued that working memory holds about seven items, plus or minus two, which is exactly the range where most Simon players start to struggle. The way past that ceiling is chunking: instead of remembering nine separate colors, you remember three groups of three, which your brain treats as three items instead of nine. Simon also benefits from what researchers call dual coding. Because every color is paired with a distinct tone, your brain encodes the sequence through two channels at once, visual and auditory, and either one can trigger recall of the other. Many strong players report that late in a long game they are following the melody more than the lights.
A few practical habits will noticeably raise your streaks. Say the colors out loud or in your head as they play (green, green, blue, red), because verbal rehearsal is one of the most reliable memory aids there is. Group the sequence into chunks of three or four and rehearse each chunk as a small rhythm or tune. Lean on the tones: the four notes were deliberately chosen to sound pleasant in any order, so long sequences turn into little melodies that are easier to keep in your head than abstract color lists. And keep a steady pace when you answer, since rushing is the most common cause of slips on sequences you actually knew. For reference, most casual players reach rounds 8 to 14, a streak of 20 or more is excellent, and dedicated record chasers have gone far beyond that with heavy practice.
Simon: The Glowing Disc That Made Memory a Party Game
Simon exists because Ralph Baer thought a good idea had been badly executed. Baer, the engineer behind the Magnavox Odyssey and often called the father of home video games, encountered Atari's Touch Me arcade cabinet at a trade show in 1976. He liked the repeat-the-sequence gameplay but found the execution poor, with clashing colors and, in his words, awful rasping sounds. Working with Howard Morrison of the design firm Marvin Glass and Associates, and with programmer Lenny Cope writing the software for the Texas Instruments chip inside, Baer rebuilt the concept as a friendly flying-saucer-shaped disc. His key insight was musical: he chose four notes that harmonize like a bugle call, so that no matter what random order the game produces, the result sounds pleasant. That single decision turned an error-buzzer test into something people genuinely enjoyed listening to.
Milton Bradley launched Simon in 1978 with a midnight party at Studio 54, the most famous nightclub on the planet at the time, complete with a giant four-foot Simon suspended from the ceiling. The stunt worked. Simon retailed for about 25 dollars, a premium price for a toy in 1978, and still became the must-have gift of that Christmas season and a fixture of the memory-game genre for decades. Atari, in a curious twist, responded by releasing a handheld version of Touch Me, effectively imitating the toy that had imitated its own arcade machine.
Simon never really left popular culture. It has appeared in countless films and TV shows as visual shorthand for the late 1970s and 1980s, inspired oversized versions playable at museums and fan conventions, and spawned dozens of official variants, from Super Simon to pocket editions to app remakes. Memory athletes and dedicated fans have pushed the format to extremes, repeating sequences of more than 80 steps in record attempts, far beyond the roughly seven-item span an unaided working memory can hold.
